If you hold a Fachhochschulreife or fachgebundene Hochschulreife and dream of studying at a university in Baden-Württemberg, the Deltaprüfung is your gateway. This aptitude test, developed by ITB Consulting and administered centrally at the University of Mannheim, bridges the gap between your existing school-leaving certificate and full university admission. Our Deltaprüfung preparation guide covers everything you need to know for the 2026 cycle, from registration deadlines to proven exam-day tactics.
What is the Deltaprüfung?
The Deltaprüfung (officially: Studierfähigkeitstest) is a university aptitude exam that allows students with a Fachhochschulreife or fachgebundene Hochschulreife to gain admission to state universities and colleges of education in Baden-Württemberg — courses that would otherwise require the Abitur (allgemeine Hochschulreife).
Important: The Deltaprüfung does not test subject-specific knowledge. It measures academic aptitude — your ability to think logically, process information, and work under time pressure. If you can prepare your mindset as well as your skills, you are already ahead of most candidates.

Who can take the Deltaprüfung?
To register, you must hold — or be in the process of obtaining — a Fachhochschulreife or fachgebundene Hochschulreife. Specifically:
- You already hold one of these qualifications, OR
- You will obtain it by the application deadline of 15 July of the relevant year.
- You do not need to present your leaving certificate on the day of the exam itself.
Note for international applicants: Whether your foreign certificate is recognised as equivalent to a Fachhochschulreife is assessed at the time of university application. not at exam registration. Check with your target university early.
The five task groups: what to expect
The exam lasts 185 minutes and consists of five sections. None require prior specialist knowledge — all sections test cognitive ability and reasoning:
| Section | What it tests |
|---|---|
| Quantitatives Problemlösen | Number series, calculations, mathematical logic |
| Matrizen | Pattern recognition, matrices, spatial thinking |
| Sprachgefühl | Language comprehension, analogies, logical deduction |
| Schlussfolgerungen | Interpreting texts, drawing conclusions |
| Auswertung von Diagrammen und Tabellen | Extracting and analysing data from charts and graphs |
No calculators or technical aids are permitted. Bring a valid photo ID and a pen — that is all you need.
Deltaprüfung study strategies that work
As with any aptitude test, practice is everything. The question formats are unusual and highly specific — students who see them for the first time on exam day are at a serious disadvantage. Here is how to prepare effectively:
Start early and plan strategically
Give yourself at least 6–8 weeks of focused preparation. Create a weekly study schedule that rotates between the five task types. Consistency beats last-minute cramming every time.
Use dedicated preparation materials
Generic aptitude test books are not sufficient. Use Deltaprüfung specific preparation books that mirror the exact question styles, timing constraints, and difficulty levels you will face on the day. Our edulink preparation books for the Deltaprüfung are designed precisely for this exam.
Identify and target your weaknesses
After your first practice session, identify which of the five sections costs you the most time or points. Focus your remaining preparation there — not on the areas where you are already comfortable.
Simulate exam conditions
Time pressure is one of the biggest factors in the Deltaprüfung. Practice full timed sessions so that 185 minutes feels familiar, not frightening. Use a stopwatch and do not allow yourself extra time — real exam conditions only.
Talk to past participants
Connect with students who have already taken the Deltaprüfung via forums and community groups. Their practical insights — which sections ran over, what caught them off guard — are worth more than any guide.
Deltaprüfung hacks: what to do when you are stuck
Even well-prepared candidates hit difficult questions. Here are 7 tactical approaches to protect your score:
- Skip and return. Flag difficult questions and move on. Time spent stuck on one question costs you multiple easier ones later.
- Predict before you look. For reasoning questions, form your answer mentally before reading the answer choices. If your instinct matches an option, it is likely correct.
- Eliminate the extremes. Answers containing „always“, „never“, or „exactly“ are often incorrect. Eliminate them first.
- Never leave blanks. There is no penalty for wrong answers. If time is running out, fill every remaining blank — even a guess gives you a statistical chance.
- Benchmark the options. Compare A against B, then the winner against C. This keeps your logic consistent and prevents second-guessing.
- Spot the outlier. If one answer looks completely different from the other three, it is usually the distractor — not the answer.
- Trust your first instinct. Only change an answer if you find a clear, specific reason your first choice was wrong.

Final advice: start your preparation early
The Deltaprüfung is not a test of what you know — it is a test of how you think. That means preparation is the great equaliser. Students who practise with the right materials, under realistic conditions, consistently outperform those who rely on raw ability alone.
Registration opens 1 March 2026 and closes 31 March 2026 — do not miss the window. Use our Deltaprüfung preparation books, sharpen your timing, and walk into Mannheim with confidence. We will see you at a Baden-Württemberg university.
